What is HDD?

Directional boring, also referred to as horizontal directional drilling (HDD), is a minimal impact trenchless method of installing underground utilities such as pipe, conduit, or cables along a defined underground path using a surface-launched drilling rig. Directional Boring offers significant environmental advantages over traditional open cut pipeline/utility installations. The technique is routinely used when conventional trenching or excavating is not practical or when minimal surface disturbance is required.

What is Conventional Boring?

Conventional boring, also referred to as auger boring or jack and bore, is also a trenchless application in which a casing pipe is jacked into the earth. Excavated soil is removed from the top of the casing tube instead. Auger boring employs a cutting edge attached to the auger within the casing pipe and hydraulic jacks, to rotate and penetrate the soil.
